A bathroom should typically be the cleanest place in your home. Even if you clean your bathroom regularly, there are still things that either need to be regularly washed or even replaced. The longer you hold on to these items without washing or replacing them, the grottier they get!

1. Shower curtains and liners.

Shower curtains come in all styles and material but, how do you know what material is best? A fashionable shower curtain makes your bathroom pretty, but if it’s not good material it can end up getting moldy, and it can make your bathroom smell mildewy. That’s not very inviting! It all has to do with the shower liner you are using.

If you plan on buying cheaper shower liners, they need to be replaced regularly.

If you want a washable shower liner, here is a guide on buying the perfect shower liner to protect that awesome shower curtain!

2. Bathmats/Rugs

Now this one is a no brainer! When you get out of the shower, you step on your bath mat and it gets all wet. That’s the perfect place for a mildew smell to develop and for mold to grow, especially since bathrooms tend to run at a warmer temperature due to your hot showers.

Here are 5 of the best bath mats you can purchase.

Either replace monthly or wash weekly with a half cup of hydrogen peroxide.

3. Loofa, sponges, and poufs

Replace every three weeks

These bathing accessories can quickly become bacterial breeding grounds. We may soap them up and wring them dry, but they contain lots of nooks and crannies for fungal organisms to hide in. We also hang them in the shower, where they have little chance to dry completely. Find out here how to care for your loofas.

4. Towels and hand towels

Wash every couple of days – or even daily

They may look pretty and decorative, but they soon become nasty vessels of yuck as you use them more than once a day. Change every couple of days – or even every day if you have a large family or roommates. Throw them in the washing machine on the hottest setting, add in two cups of white vinegar, and then wash again on a regular setting with a regular detergent. Avoid using liquid fabric softener and dryer sheets if you want to keep them soft and fluffy.

5. Toothbrushes

These guys should be replaced every three to four months

Keep your toothbrush far away from your toilet… because yes it really is true. Every time you flush, a plume of pooey bacteria is released into the air. Rinse it thoroughly after each use, let it dry completely, and replace as soon as the bristles show any sign of splaying. And remember, toothbrushes – even your old ones – have a second life as your most handy cleaning tool for crevices.
